A Mythological Marvel

Jatayu Earth’s Center is built around the legendary story from the Indian epic Ramayana. It is believed that Jatayu, the noble bird, tried to rescue Sita when Ravana abducted her. Jatayu fought bravely to stop Ravana, sacrificing himself in the process. According to mythology, this very hill is where Jatayu fell after the battle, wounded and noble, waiting for Lord Ram to arrive.

To honor his bravery, the Kerala government, in collaboration with renowned sculptor Rajiv Anchal, created a magnificent tribute: the world’s largest functional bird sculpture. This awe-inspiring sculpture stands at 200 feet in length, 150 feet in width, and 70 feet in height, making it a record-breaking marvel that blends mythological reverence with engineering excellence. Not only is it a visual wonder, but it also houses functional spaces like a museum and theater, making it an immersive experience for visitors. Its realistic design, with one wing outstretched, appears as if the great bird is still watching over the land it tried to protect.

My Visit to Jatayu Earth’s Center

I, Jaswant Prajapati, visited Jatayu Earth’s Center earlier this year with my better half Jyoti Verma, and the experience was nothing short of magical. Together, we explored this magnificent destination that celebrates courage, mythology, and peace.

Our journey began with a cable car ride that gently took us up the hill. The views from the cabin were breathtaking—lush greenery, rocky hills, and scattered villages all glistening under the Kerala sun. As the sculpture came into view, it felt like stepping into the pages of a legendary tale.

Standing in front of the giant statue was overwhelming. The detailing on the wings, claws, and face of Jatayu was mesmerizing. You could almost feel the spirit of the bird watching over the valley.

We walked all around the sculpture, capturing the moment with many selfies and couple portraits. The cool wind blowing at the top of the hill made the experience even more romantic. You can check out these memories on my Instagram: @jaswantprajapatii.

One of the most spiritual moments was witnessing the sacred footprint of Lord Ram, preserved beneath a glass enclosure. According to legend, Lord Ram arrived at this very spot in search of Sita and received the final words of Jatayu before his soul departed. The Ram Temple nearby was a calm and sacred space where we offered prayers. It gave us a moment of quiet reflection amidst the adventure.

Jyoti and I stayed until evening and were lucky to witness both sunrise and sunset from the hilltop. The golden rays of the sun made the entire sculpture glow, and the sky turned into a palette of colors. We took plenty of photos of both moments—pictures you can find on my Instagram as well.

Inside the Sculpture: The Ramayana Experience

Inside the sculpture is a beautifully designed digital museum and exhibition that brings the story of Jatayu and Ramayana to life using audio-visual technology. Animations, models, and light displays transport visitors into ancient India, making mythology engaging even for children and modern audiences.

The inner chambers also include a mini-theater where visitors can watch a short documentary on the making of the sculpture and the legend it represents.
